Why Solar Alone Didn’t Solve This Arizona Cold-Storage Facility’s Electric Bill
Adding solar does not automatically solve every part of a commercial electric bill. A published Arizona cold-storage case illustrates why the utility rate, demand peaks, and equipment performance deserve attention alongside solar production.
The Nogales case
In a May 2018 case study, Naya Energy describes Mas Melons & Grapes, a produce business in Nogales that had already invested in solar over its warehouse and carports. The company remained dissatisfied with its electricity bills. Naya added equipment-level monitoring and alerts to help staff understand demand spikes, solar performance, and compressor health.
Naya reports an average 30 kW reduction in monthly demand. It also reports that the facility’s March bill was 30% below the previous March. That comparison covers one month; it does not establish annual savings or isolate the effect of each operational change. These are provider-reported results, not independently verified by Peak Ready.
What Arizona cold-storage operators can learn
Before buying more equipment, compare interval usage with solar output and the actual utility tariff. Identify which loads set billed demand, whether compressors are operating properly, and whether maintenance or operating changes could reduce expensive peaks. The economics depend on when power is needed as well as how much is consumed.
Where batteries fit
The published case does not document a battery installation or battery savings. A battery may deserve a separate feasibility review, but its value must be modeled against the facility’s peak duration, recharge requirements, utility rate, and project costs. Outage protection also requires a design around specific critical loads and the required operating duration.
